Microsoft Windows Surface Laptop Launched; With Windows 10 ‘S’!

Introducing Surface Laptop, powered by Windows 10 S??? What is “S”?

It’s back to school for Microsoft!

Microsoft wants its laptops and software once again to have a prime place in the classroom, where it once held a stronghold until Google’s cheap, efficient Chromebooks came along.

At its EDU event on Tuesday, Microsoft announced a new Surface laptop, along with some partner PCs, meant to help it win back schools across the country. Windows PCs years ago dominated in schools, while Apple took a back seat until it rebuilt itself with the iPod, iMac and ultimately the iPhone.

Then came Google’s Chrome OS software and Chromebooks, which offered schools an inexpensive and safe way to primarily surf the web for students. They were also easier to manage for teachers setting up computers in the classroom.

Chromebooks have since become the top choice for schools, with more than 20 million students using the laptops internationally, according to Google.

Microsoft is betting on its newest laptops to turn the tide again.

Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop to take on the MacBook Air, going with a traditional clamshell design and ditching the hybrid tablet-laptop format that built the Surface’s name. The Surface Laptop will sell for $999 in the US, matching Apple’s price range.

It comes with an Intel Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD storage, and Microsoft is promising 14 hours of battery life. The 13-inch laptop weighs less than a 13-inch MacBook Pro at 2.76 pounds (1.25 kg) and comes with a touchscreen display and Surface Pen support.

The laptop comes in four colors: silver, gold, burgundy and gray.

Windows 10 S:

Windows 10 S is a streamlined version of Microsoft’s operating system intended for the classroom.

The new Windows 10 S takes a walled-garden approach, offering faster load times and more security for students. Microsoft said it would also have faster start times and offer better battery performance than its predecessors, but there’s a catch.

On Windows 10 S, you’ll only be able to run Microsoft’s apps and can only install third-party apps from Microsoft’s Windows store. It takes a page from Google’s Chrome OS, which school administrators flocked to for its simplicity.

The closed-in software should make it easier for teachers to manage laptops in the schools, along with features like classroom chat groups, assignment submissions and moderation tools.

The operating system allows for easy mass setups across classrooms by using a USB key. It will be free for any current PCs using Windows Pro.

The Surface Laptop though is admittedly pricier, and as Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Surface Computing Panos Panay made it clear during the presentation, this device is taking on the Apple MacBooks. Microsoft says the Surface Laptop is thinner and lighter than any MacBook in the market, and it is faster than the current MacBook Air.

Now the Surface Laptop also runs Windows 10 S, which loads much faster than the regular Windows 10, and can only run apps from the Windows Store. With Windows 1O S you can only run the apps that Microsoft has verified. If you want to run something from outside of the store, you’ll have to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro and the company will give users the option. Do note, the Windows 10 Pro upgrade is only till December 31, 2017. The Surface Laptop also comes with one year of Office 365 Personal free.

According to Microsoft, the applications ensure “Microsoft-verified security and integrity.” This also means you can’t download and install Chrome or Firefox on these laptops, and Microsoft Edge is the default browser.- Microsoft Officials Said.

So what are the specifications of the Surface Laptop? What’s the starting price for these devices?

The Intel Core i7 range with Intel Iris 640 graphics starts at $1599 for the 256GB SSD + 8GB RAM version. This one comes only in the colour Platinum and costs $1,599. The 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD version, which is also available in the colour Platinum will cost $2,199.

Now the Surface Laptop sports a 13.5-inch PixelSense Display, with 2256 x 1504 pixels resolution, which works out to 201 PPI. The display supports 10 point multi-touch, and has a 3:2 aspect ratio and the Surface Pen will work on this as well.

The laptop comes in four colors: silver, gold, burgundy and gray.

Some of this personal feel comes from Microsoft’s investment in color***

Platinum is the Surface core, our heritage color. Anodization gives it new depths and life. It continues to make a timeless and bright statement.

Graphite Gold is the ultimate neutral. The shimmer in the metal and material bring a comforting glow.

Cobalt Blue has the depth you see in the sea or sky. It’s a color inspired by nature and feels bright yet natural.

Burgundy’s elegance stands out. The color shifts from soft rose to deep red as you move from day to night or from inside to out.

Dimensions for this Surface Laptop are 308.1 mm x 223.27 mm x 14.48 mm, and it weighs 1.252 grams. It has a USB 3.0 port, headset jack, Mini DisplayPort, Surface Connect port, and is compatible with Surface Dial and the Surface Dock as well. Microsoft is promising 14.5 hours of battery life with the laptop.

Surface Laptop starts at $999 USD and will be available beginning on June 15th.

Customers can pre-order Surface Laptop starting today in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom where available at Microsoft Store, and Surface Laptop will come to China later this year and we will announce availability in other markets in coming months.

Microsoft will also be partnering with Pearson Education to bring 3D and MR devices into classroom curriculum by 2018.
